About the Artwork
I love Hellebore, also known as the Winter rose in NZ. These beautiful flowers bloom in the dark winter months, providing hope that spring is not too far away.
Named after it’s famous use as a poison, Hellebore is from the Greek word ‘Helleborus’ - meaning “to harm” and “food”. Hellebore is rich in myths and folklore. From the battlefields of the Greek, besieging a city by poisoning it's water supplies; to witches mixing potions to enable them to fly or be invisible.
I’m learning that flowers have a symbolic meaning. Hellebore’s is Tranquility and Protection against calumny, scandal or anxiety.
When you look at this artwork, I like to think you feel a sense of tranquility, strength and hope.
